The National Quality Forum (NQF) recently published The ABCs of Measurement, an introductory brochure on performance measures in healthcare. Written in a user-friendly style, this primer addresses questions such as:
- What is a measure?
- Why measure?
- How do we choose what to measure?
- Who sets the priorities, and who carries them out?
Measures can help to drive quality improvement (“you can’t manage what you don’t measure”), inform consumers, and influence payment.
The brochure contains case stories on how measures are used to improve care and examples of the different types of measures (process, outcome, patient experience, structural, composite) that may be used for various medical conditions and settings.
